Just completed one of our longest tuk-tuk drives yet—Ella to Kandy, covering 350 kilometers of winding mountain roads, breathtaking tea estates, and post-cyclone recovery zones in the heart of Sri Lanka's central highlands.Current Road Status December 2025: Most routes connecting Ella and Kandy are cleared and operational following extensive infrastructure work after Cyclone Ditwah, which impacted the hill country with landslides and flooding in late November. However, recovery is ongoing in specific areas, and real-time local knowledge proves more reliable than navigation apps. Here's where local knowledge saved our day. Google Maps directed us toward a significantly longer alternative route, citing road closures on the primary Ella-Kandy corridor. However, when we stopped near Mahiyangana and asked local shopkeepers and drivers, they confidently told us the A26 highway was open and functioning normally. We trusted their advice, took the A26, and they were absolutely right—zero road closures, zero traffic congestion, and a much more direct journey than the app suggested. Sri Lanka's hill country remains one of the most stunning regions to explore, and responsible travel means staying informed, flexible, and deeply connected with the communities who call these mountains home.
