Before teeth appear (0–6 months) • No brush yet. • After feeds, gently wipe the gums once a day using a clean, damp finger or soft muslin cloth. • This removes milk residue and helps baby get used to oral care. 2. When the first tooth erupts (usually 6–8 months) • This is when brushing must start. • Use a soft baby toothbrush or a silicone finger brush. • Brush twice a day, especially before bedtime. Toothpaste at this stage • Use a smear (rice-grain size) of fluoride toothpaste (≈1000 ppm). • No need to rinse; just wipe excess foam. 3. 1–3 years • Shift fully to a small-headed, soft baby toothbrush. • Continue rice-grain amount of fluoride toothpaste. • Brush twice daily. • Parents must brush — toddlers cannot clean properly on their own. 4. 3–6 years • Increase toothpaste to pea-sized. • Child can try brushing, but parent must finish and supervise. • Teach gentle circular motions; don’t scrub hard. Finger vs toothbrush — when to use what • Finger / cloth: Before teeth erupt, or during painful teething days. • Finger brush: Good transition tool when 1–2 teeth appear. • Toothbrush: Best and necessary once multiple teeth are present. Right brushing technique (simple and safe) • Sit baby on your lap, head supported. • Brush gently in small circles, covering front, back, and gum line. • Total time: about 1 minute in babies, 2 minutes after age 2. Important do’s and don’ts • Do not put baby to bed with milk after teeth appear. • Avoid sweetened pacifiers or honey. • Replace toothbrush every 3 months or after illness. • Teething does not cause cavities — brushing must continue. Bottom line 👉 Start cleaning gums early. 👉 Start brushing the moment the first tooth appears. 👉 Parents brush daily until at least 6 years.
