When two brothers discover Fox’s car half-submerged in a pond in a local nature preserve and parts of an unidentified body strewn about the nearby woods, the entire community, including Detective Horace Zwender and his deputy, begins to ask disturbing questions about Francis Fox and who he might really be. 🍷📚 Oates magnificently creates a shocking, dark novel about a paedophile, his relationship with the victims and quietly author slipped into the tenderness of the abused girl's soul which is untamed but broken after the disappearance of their favourite teacher. The dark and gritty raw sides of paedophile, their psychological layers crafted beautifully. Gripping, disturbing, lyrical narrative is surreal when author dives into the teenage victim's perspective, it was really terrible that they never understood the abuses. The sensitive subject and its complexity well blended with author's eerie atmospheric presentation created a powerful riveting amalgamation. A real powerhouse writing but alas it's painfully slow.
