Words, Worlds, and the Weight of History Shashi Tharoor at AKLF 2026. This year at 17th edition of Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival I was waiting for my favourite author Shashi Tharoor's session and thoroughly enjoyed the splendid evening. He came on the stage and instantly took the stage with his signature blend of erudition and wit, Tharoor didn’t merely speak about history or literature, his words made the session felt less like a lecture and more like a dialogue where colonial memory, national identity, and linguistic inheritance met contemporary responsibility. Tharoor was speaking on a book release occasion, The Sage Who Reimagined Hinduism: The Life, Lessons, & Legacy of Sree Narayana Guru, has released this Aklf. The book explores the life, philosophy and enduring influence of Sree Narayana Guru, a 19th-century thinker whose ideas played a key role in the Kerala renaissance and challenged rigid social hierarchies within Hindu society. Tharoor traces how the reformer used reason, ethics and education to question caste-based discrimination and religious orthodoxy. He addressed to a real problem in a very sporting manner- One of the problems in our country is that good books about the great men and women of our society tend to be mammoth,” he admired that the book was designed to suit the “Tiktok generation” without sacrificing depth. He also reaffirmed something essential, literature is not detached from life. It shapes our moral imagination, our political consciousness, and our sense of belonging. The session felt grounding. It reminded us that literature festivals are not just celebrations of books, but spaces for reflection. It makes us slowing down, listening deeply, and thinking critically. Thank you #Aklf2026 for giving us the opportunity to watch such amazing memorable conversation. #AKLF2026 #KolkataLovesAklf #Aklf17years #Bookblogger #Literaryfestivals #Theladylivesinbook
