Settling is what I had been doing for years. Waiting for potential. Waiting for change. Working on the relationship. Over-loving. Over-giving. And still, no change. This isn’t about blame or shame. Not at all. I still have love for my ex. But sometimes people don’t want to change or it’s not in their capacity to change maybe, or it simply comes down to compatibility or unaligned paths. When people ask me why I didn’t try, the truth is we did. For years actually. We followed what society told us we should do. But somewhere deep down he could not face his fears and we had to give up but everything happens for good. Until one day came, and we mutually decided to stop trying and go our separate ways Even four years after the breakup, we had a good relationship. No boundaries were ever crossed cos we had love and respect for each other. We didn’t want to confuse our friendship. But friendship only works when it’s mutual. When it comes from a place of no resentment, no hate, no anger. All of that existed in the relationship, and by the time it ended, we didn’t have any of it left. If you’re still clinging to hope, still waiting for him to choose you, to change... you might be waiting a long time. That saying “if he wanted to, he would” couldn’t be more true. Not cos he’s changing for you, but cos he has to WANT to face his emotional wounds himself, for him. And sometimes, they just don’t want to.
