The great parenting dilemma of our age. My 10-year-old @abeerchinchin hit me with the big question: “Why can’t I have a smartphone like everyone else?” It’s a valid question, and it sparked a conversation I know many of us are having in our homes. On one hand, technology is undeniably the future. It’s a life skill, a window to the world, and the reality our kids are growing into. On the other hand, I believe the most powerful processor he can ever own is his own mind. My take? Right now, in these formative years, my job is less about making him tech-savvy and more about helping him build a strong cognitive foundation. To hone his curiosity, critical thinking, and his ability to connect—not just to WiFi, but to people, to nature, to the pages of a book. I want him to be a human with a deep connection to himself first, before he becomes a human connected to the internet. So, for now, we read about technology. We study it. We understand its principles. The apps and the algorithms can wait. Because a sharp mind, once developed, can master any tool later with far greater power and purpose. This isn’t a verdict, it’s a choice. One that I, as a father, am making with the best knowledge and intention I have. I know the world is evolving rapidly, and perhaps evolution will find its way regardless. I trust that journey, and I’ll adapt with it. But for today, I’ll keep doing what I believe is best for his core development. I’d genuinely love to hear from my fellow parents on this. How are you navigating this? What rules have you set? What has worked and what hasn’t? Let’s learn from each other and build a repository of wisdom for all of us going through this modern parenting challenge. Share your stories in the comments. Let’s get this conversation going. #NavedAndAbeer #FatherAndSon #Fatherhood #ParentingDilemmas #ParentingInTheDigitalAge #SmartphoneKids #BasicPhone #ConsciousParenting #RaiseReaders #ChildDevelopment #TechFreeChildhood #NavedQureshi #FatherhoodSeries #ModernParenting #ListenToYourKids
