In the golden era of the Vijayanagara Empire, the revered saint and composer Purandara Dasaru embarked on a spiritual journey that led him to the mystical ruins of Hampi. Roaming through the ancient city, he chanced upon a hallowed temple dedicated to PraaNadevaru(YantrOdharaka Anjaneya), the embodiment of devotion and strength. PraaNadevaru is carved on a big rock. He sits in Padmasana, encirlcled by the powerful SriChakra, also referred as Yantra . His right hand is in VyakhyanaMudra , and his left hand is in DhyanaMudra. He wears Kiritamukuta and some jewelry. Around the Yantra, there are twelve monkeys holding each other’s tails, looking the other way. This shows the twelve days Sri Vyasarajaru prayed before the Lord blessed him. Filled with profound reverence, Purandara Dasaru decided to offer his musical homage to the divine presence. His voice echoed through the sacred halls, singing praises to the mighty deity. As his melodious notes filled the air, a remarkable event took place. The atmosphere seemed to throb with an ethereal energy, and the temple stones seemed to resonate with Dasaru’s devotion, as if PraaNadevaru had descended to join the celestial chorus. The gathered locals stood in awe of this divine spectacle, and the tale of Purandara Dasaru’s transcendent performance in front of PraaNadevaru quickly spread, becoming a cherished legend in Hampi’s spiritual heritage. From that moment on, Hampi’s ruins echoed not only with the remnants of an ancient empire, but also with the spiritual resonance of Purandara Dasaru’s devotion to PraaNadevaru. This sacred encounter testified to the boundless power of music as a conduit for divine connection, forever etching Purandara Dasaru’s legacy into the heart of Hampi.
