Most “urgent deadlines” in corporate are just poor planning from someone who won’t admit it. And the fallout always lands on the people who actually get things done. You can’t control other people’s planning. But you can control how you respond to it. Here are 3 ways to handle it without burning out. 1. Clarify before committing. Next time someone drops an “urgent” task on you, ask “What happens if this is done tomorrow instead of today?” You’ll be shocked how often the deadline is completely flexible. 2. Negotiate timelines. Say “I can prioritize this now, but that means X will be delayed. Which is more important?” It puts the decision back on them instead of you silently absorbing the pressure. 3. Protect your non-negotiables. End of day shut down. Lunch without your laptop. At least one daily block of deep work. Someone else’s urgency is not your emergency. You can’t control poor planning. But you can set boundaries so it stops controlling you. Boundaries aren’t selfish. They’re strategic. Swipe through the carousel for the full breakdown. If “urgent” requests keep hijacking your calendar, it’s time to take back control. Save this for the next time someone throws a last minute fire drill on your desk.
