Half the “urgent” requests in corporate aren’t urgent at all. They’re just poor planning disguised as emergency. Someone didn’t plan ahead. Now you’re expected to drop everything, cancel your lunch, and work late to fix their lack of foresight. And somehow, it always lands on the people who actually get things done. You can’t control other people’s planning. But you can control how you respond. Before you say yes to every urgent request, ask yourself: “What happens if this is done tomorrow instead of today?” You’ll be shocked how often the answer is “nothing changes.” When the deadline is actually flexible, negotiate. Offer an alternative timeline. Say: “I can prioritize this now, but that means X will be delayed. Which is more important?” It puts the decision back on them, not you. Protect your non-negotiables. End-of-day shutdown. Lunch without your laptop. At least one daily block of deep work. These aren’t luxuries. They’re necessities. Urgent isn’t your emergency unless you make it one. You can’t control poor planning. But you can set boundaries so it stops controlling you. Comment YES to join my free community for strategies on knowing your worth and getting paid for it.
