In March, Brijesh Solanki, a state-level kabaddi player from Uttar Pradesh, rescued a puppy stuck in a drain. In the process, he got bitten. At that time, her didn’t think it was serious - after all it was just a small scratch that hardly made a difference. So, he didn’t get treatment. A few months later, he died of rabies. And the saddest part? It could have been completely prevented. Yes, Rabies is 100% preventable if treated BEFORE symptoms appear. Did you know India records the highest number of rabies deaths in the world? Over one-third of global deaths from rabies happen here — often because people don’t take small bites or scratches seriously. As a parent, this hit close to home. In January, my son was scratched by a pet dog in our society. In March, it happened again — this time with my daughter. Different dog, same situation. The dogs were vaccinated. The scratches weren’t deep. But I still called our pediatrician @drpriyapradhan immediately after seeing the wound. And I’m so glad I did. She said: “Don’t wait. Come in for the anti-rabies vaccine NOW.” Here’s what I learnt from her: ✔️ Rabies is 100% preventable if treated before symptoms appear ✔️ Even a scratch or a lick on broken skin can transmit the virus ✔️ Once symptoms begin, there’s no cure Both my kids completed their rabies vaccine course and are doing great. But this experience made me realise how little most of us actually know. Here’s what you should do if your child is bitten or scratched — by a pet or stray: ✅ Wash the area with soap and running water for 15 minutes ✅ Apply antiseptic like Betadine ✅ Don’t bandage the wound ✅ See a doctor immediately — even if the animal is vaccinated ✅ Ask about Rabies Immunoglobulin if the bite is near the face/head or from a stray This post isn’t meant to create fear — but about sharing facts. Don’t wait and watch. Act fast. That’s what can save a life. 🩺 If you’ve been through something similar, please share.
