Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) affects ruminants and can have significant consequences if left uncontrolled. It has a complex life cycle involving the mud snail🐌. Liver fluke causes significant damage to the liver during its migration through the bile ducts. Large numbers will likely cause death in the animal, but smaller numbers will cause chronic issues due to ongoing liver damage. Treatment in cattle🐮 can be timed after housing by selecting a product which kills fluke down to the length of time since the animals were housed. Eg closantel 6-8 weeks post housing Sheep 🐑 unless housed control can be harder. Avoiding known fluke ground can help. Using coproantigen testing will aid treatment timings and efficacy.
