Recently I had the pleasure of attending the Anglo-Indian Food Festival at The Astor Kolkata at the iconic Kebab‑E‑Que. My experience felt like embarking on a scrumptious trip through the hidden corners of India’s colonial history. The Anglo Indian food festival touches on the kind of cuisine that has British subtleties and spicy Calcutta undertones. A legacy that basically came from railway refreshment rooms, the humble coffee-house kitchen and the home cooking traditions that people hold so dear even today! But don’t expect bland & boring food - these dishes have a depth of flavour, subtle spices and some serious history behind them. From a bowl of East Indian Mulligatawny Soup that just warms the heart, right through to nostalgic dishes like Railway Vegetable Cutlet, Coconut Prawn Cutlet and Mutton Pantheras, every single dish just hits the spot. The main dishes were equally comforting - picture Fish Mollie swimming in a lovely coconut milk sauce, the famous Railway Mutton Curry served up with crispy spiced bread rolls, Chicken À La Kiev and the bold Pork Vindaloo. And then of course there was a sweet ending to the meal with some old school desserts like East India Company Coconut Pudding and a rich Dark Spiced English Fruit Cake.
