That’s exactly what Nohkalikai in Meghalaya does. Many years ago, there lived a woman named Likai. She was a mother, a widow, and someone who deeply loved her little daughter. Hoping to bring stability into their lives, she got married again. But instead of love, her second marriage brought something darker. Her new husband couldn’t handle the attention Likai gave her child. Jealousy began to grow quietly, and one day, while Likai was away working hard to support the family, he committed an unimaginable act. He killed the child... and used her flesh to cook a meal. Tired from the day, Likai returned home. Her daughter wasn’t around, but thinking she must be playing outside, Likai sat down and ate the food her husband had prepared. It felt strange... but she had no reason to doubt anything. Later, while reaching for her betel nut basket, something inside made her heart stop. It was her daughter’s fingers. The shock. The grief. The pain. It was too much. Likai ran towards the edge of the cliff and jumped. And that’s where the waterfall got its name, Nohkalikai, which translates to “the leap of Likai” in the Khasi language.
