Once the ancient Silk Route stop called Almatau, this city grew around apple orchards — yes, the name literally comes from alma, meaning apple. And fun fact: scientists say the apples we eat today? Their ancestors were born right here. Walking through Almaty feels like flipping pages of history: Soviet-era buildings, modern glass towers, and snow-kissed mountains watching over everything like protective elders. The people? Warm, calm, soft-spoken… the kind who’ll help you even if they don’t speak English. As an Indian, you’ll feel oddly at home — they love Bollywood, and you’ll hear “Shah Rukh Khan?” more times than you expect. The culture is this dreamy mix of nomadic traditions, Russian influence, and Central Asian pride. Food? Oh my god — beshbarmak, lagman, baursak, dumplings, soups that taste like hugs, and tea… endless tea.
