But why do we still end up glorifying men for being a part of this? Here is my perspective as a modern day working woman: I find it odd when people tell me I am lucky that my husband participates in chores & parents the baby. It find this thought process odd. Will you tell him, that he’s lucky that I earn money & bring it home. No, you won’t say that since that’s rude. Then by what logic do you think that a man doing household chores is a magical incident? Women working & taking equal responsibility is part of women empowerment. Then by the same logic isn’t a man who knows how to do household chores also empowered? Why are we so unfair to men ? Why is it that we treat this behaviour as something out of the ordinary? It is this ingrained patriarchal thought that sometimes even makes men shy away from owning that they are equal partners. Ridiculous as it may sound, there are men who will share the responsibility of housework but never let it be known to their friends or colleagues. Because accepting that he washes clothes at home may make him a ‘Zoru ka Gulaam’ & will hinder his masculine avatar. Most Indian bahus may hide the fact that their husbands also clean the baby diapers, for the fear of being judged. This is also the reason why men only see themselves as helpers in all household chores & the woman is the manager or the CEO of the house by default. Why? Why do we say Men help? What don’t we say Men do? Like you, I didn’t do any special courses on home Management either. I did a course in Business Management. Like you, I know what to do at my job. Like you, I step up at the workplace & try to prove my competence. Why do I have to do that at home too?
