From Darkness to Light does exactly that. Sanchari Ghosh takes us on a compelling journey through the life of Naina, a woman working in a brothel in the heart of Mumbai. Naina offers a perspective that rises far beyond the boundaries society places on women in such spaces. Through her, we witness the daily lives, struggles, and quiet courage of those around her, each carrying their own burdens, their own stories, their own path and the deep, often unseen reasons that pushed them into this world. One of the strongest layers of the book is how it portrays friendship, family ties, love, loss, and the weight of responsibility. Many of these women are not here by choice but by circumstance, poverty, lack of money, debts, broken families, or responsibilities at home that left them with no other option. Their pasts shape their present in ways that are heartbreaking yet deeply human. I liked how their friendships act as a lifeline, messy, tender, supportive, and real. What stayed with me most is how Naina spends her free time nurturing her spiritual side, learning about astrology, deepening her spiritual knowledge, and sharing it in her own thoughtful, grounded ways.
