Pavel Durov is a tech entrepreneur best known for creating VK and Telegram, two major platforms on the modern internet. He was born on 10 October 1984 in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), in the former Soviet Union, in a family of academics and linguists. From a young age, he was interested in languages, computers, and independent thinking, which later shaped his views on power, control, and digital freedom. While studying at Saint Petersburg State University, Durov built student forums and small online projects, learning how people interact and communicate online. In 2006, he launched VKontakte (VK) with a small team including his brother Nikolai, and it soon became Russia’s biggest social network, earning him a reputation as one of the country’s most successful young founders. As VK grew, Durov refused government demands to censor political content or hand over user data, which made him popular with users but brought serious conflict with authorities and powerful investors. In 2014, after years of pressure, he was forced out of VK, a moment he later described as painful but necessary for his freedom. Before leaving VK, Durov and his brother had already started working on Telegram, launched in 2013 with a focus on speed, security, and independence. Telegram added features like secret chats and self‑destructing messages, attracting users who care about privacy and free speech, even as governments in several countries tried to block or control it. Durov eventually left Russia and settled mainly in Dubai while holding multiple citizenships, keeping Telegram independent from any single state. Known for his minimalist lifestyle and small, elite team, he has turned Telegram into a platform with hundreds of millions of users and become a symbol of digital freedom-a founder who lost his first company but came back stronger without giving up his principles.
