I met my younger self for coffee today. She brought her favourite sponge cake for me, and I brought her tea from a Sri Lankan plantation. She ordered a masala chai; I ordered a double-shot espresso. We sat down and took off our shrugs. She was wearing the kurti and leggings she hated, and I was in my favourite jeans and crop top. We laughed, and she finally relaxed. She told me she was scared she'd never leave the small town or live life on her own terms. I told her I'm now settled in my dream city — and more importantly, living life my way without caring about what people expect. Her eyes sparkled with happiness. She said she was practising tooth carving, and her eyes widened when I told her I'm now a consulting periodontist. Then she whispered that she felt too broken for love. I held her hand and told her she was never broken. She would meet someone who made her feel safe and loved every single day. She asked if I had given up on my dream of living abroad. I smiled and told her I was about to visit my 13th country — with my husband. Her face lit up when I said our family is complete with two little cat babies. She hugged me tightly, beaming with joy.
