On October 31, 1984, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, in retaliation for Operation Blue Star, a military action ordered by Gandhi to remove armed militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The operation had resulted in significant casualties and was perceived by many Sikhs as an affront to their religious sanctity. In the immediate aftermath of Gandhi's assassination, anti-Sikh riots erupted across India, particularly in Delhi. Over the course of several days, mobs targeted Sikh individuals, their families, and properties. The violence was not spontaneous; investigations and reports, including those from the Nanavati Commission, indicated that the attacks were organized and, in some cases, incited by political figures and supported by law enforcement. The official government figure reports that 2,146 Sikhs were killed in Delhi, with an additional 586 deaths in other parts of the country . However, other sources estimate the death toll to be between 8,000 and 17,000 nationwide . This tragedy remains a stark reminder of how grief, politics, and vengeance can spiral into mass violence, and why accountability and remembrance are crucial even decades later.
