Bihar’s diverse history reflects its rich contributions to various religions. The state is known for its connections to Sanatan Dharma, Islam, and Buddhism. However, few people are aware of Christianity’s role in shaping the heritage of Patna. Padri Ki Haveli, also known as the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is the oldest church in Bihar, located in Patna City. Established by Roman Catholics in 1713, it was later redesigned in 1772 by Venetian architect Tirreto, who traveled from Kolkata for this purpose. This church marked the beginning of Christianity in Patna. Throughout its history, the church has endured numerous challenges. On June 25, 1763, Nawab Mir Qasim destroyed the original structure during a conflict with British traders, resulting in the loss of ancient records. It suffered further damage during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Despite these adversities, Padri Ki Haveli stands today as a magnificenti architectural masterpiece, celebrated for its intricate designs and its large cathedral bell. Notably, Mother Teresa received part of her training here, adding to the church’s spiritual and historical importance. Today, Padri Ki Haveli stands as a testament to the grace of Jesus and remains an integral part of Patna’s cultural and religious heritage.
