It had been years since we went back to nani ghar in Kutludih, Ghatshila — the house that once held our childhood summers like a secret treasure chest. No one from the family lives there anymore, and yet… everything felt familiar. The courtyard, the mango tree, the well, the quiet corners that used to echo with our laughter. Taking the kids there was deeply bittersweet. Bitter, because they couldn’t experience nani-nanu’s love and the place the way we did — Nanu tying jhulas for us on the mango tree, us climbing up trees to pluck fruits, heating water in big copper vessels over wood fires, bathing at the kuwa sal, going to rice fields and washing ourselves with the tubewell squeaking in rhythm, the scent of smoke and soil — all of it was childhood in its purest form. But also so sweet — because they got a taste of that slower, simpler life. They played with goats, pulled water from the old well, used the tubewell to drink water, picked lemons right from the trees, and rested on the “Khatiya” under open skies. It wasn’t the same — and maybe it never will be — but something about seeing them there, barefoot in the same mitti, made my heart full. A piece of the past, passed on. And that’s enough. #nostalgia #nanikaghar #yaadein #villagelifé
