Lymph nodes are part of the immune system. They act as filters and contain immune cells that help fight bacteria and viruses. When a baby gets an infection, these nodes temporarily enlarge as they actively produce immune cells. This is a normal and healthy response, not a tumour or cancer. Typical features of benign lymph node swelling: • Soft or slightly firm • Movable under the skin • Usually painless or mildly tender • Size often less than 1–2 cm • Gradually reduces over weeks after the infection settles When to be cautious and consult a doctor: • Node keeps increasing in size • Very hard, fixed, or painless • Associated with persistent fever, weight loss, night sweats • Does not reduce even after 4–6 weeks In most babies, these swellings settle on their own without any treatment.
