All that “extra” hair enters the shedding phase together — this is called telogen effluvium. •If the mother is iron-deficient, low on protein, zinc, calcium or vitamins, the hair fall becomes more severe and prolonged. Key deficiencies linked to hair fall •Iron: Low ferritin is one of the commonest causes of excessive shedding. •Protein: Hair is made of keratin; low protein intake directly weakens hair. •Zinc: Needed for hair follicle repair and growth. •Calcium & Vitamin D: Often depleted during pregnancy and breastfeeding. •B-complex (especially biotin, B12): Support hair strength and growth. What helps •Continue post-natal supplements (iron, calcium, zinc, vitamin D) as advised. •Focus on a protein-rich diet: eggs, dal, paneer, milk, curd, nuts, seeds, soy, chicken/fish. •Manage stress and sleep — both affect hair cycles. •Gentle hair care; avoid tight hairstyles and excessive heat. •Post-partum hair fall usually peaks around 3–4 months after delivery. •With proper nutrition, most women see improvement by 6–9 months. •Hair almost always grows back once the body recovers. If hair fall is very excessive, patchy, or lasting beyond 9–12 months, blood tests for iron, vitamin D, B12 and thyroid should be checked.
