Sand dunes in Ladakh… magical, vast, and surreal. I was so excited to shoot here, soaking in the beauty of nature. The warm-hearted Ladakhi people truly made us feel welcome — gentle, kind, and always respectful. But something happened during the shoot that shook me. A group of 10–12 boys — definitely not locals — were lingering around, watching us, making unsettling comments in a tone that made me deeply uncomfortable. I honestly don’t even know where in India these boys were from, but their presence turned something joyful into something fearful. Our local Ladakhi driver immediately stepped in and firmly told them to leave. Thankfully, they did. But that moment stayed with me. I was scared. My body froze. That’s why I couldn’t pose much or fully enjoy the shoot. And this isn’t new. These kinds of moments happen far too often, in too many places. It’s exhausting — the constant need to stay alert, to shrink yourself, to guard your smile. As a woman in India, safety is something we hope for, not something we feel. I’m sharing this not to overshadow the beauty of Ladakh, but to speak a truth many of us carry. It’s time we start acknowledging how often joy is interrupted by fear — and how important it is to change that.
