#Khorezm Desert Fortresses are actually located in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, and a short drive from #Khiva will take you to these mud castles, which were like fortresses protecting the settlements from a constant stream of invaders. Around the 7th century B.C., settlements started appearing around the Amu Darya (River). During excavation, coins from the 2nd century A.D. were found, which indicated a ruler named Artav (Artabanus). Areas around this region were once ruled by the Kushan Empire.
