Under Article 51A(g) of the Constitution of India, every citizen has a duty to show compassion toward all living creatures. It’s also a crime under Section 428 and Section 429 of the Indian Penal Code to kill, maim, or poison any animal. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, specifically prohibits abandoning animals in a way that subjects them to starvation or pain. Instead of harm or displacement, the law mandates: the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001—and updated in 2023—require humane Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release (“ABC”) programs for street dogs. Dogs must be sterilized, vaccinated, and returned to their original locality. Forced removal, relocation, or killing is not just cruel—it’s illegal. Be a protector.
