Eric Schmidt says one of the smartest things you can do for your business is to think ahead—far ahead. He talks about the importance of working now to figure out what the world will look like in five years. What will your customers want? How will costs change? What trends will shape your industry? It’s all about understanding where things are going and getting ready for it. Most businesses don’t do this. They focus on what’s right in front of them—planning for the next year or two—and hope for the best. But Schmidt points out that many of today’s business struggles, like products that fail or industries that fall apart, could have been avoided if people had just thought further ahead. His advice is to take a good, honest look at what you’re offering. Your strongest areas will probably do fine. But what about the ones that aren’t so strong? Are they built to last? If not, it’s time to make some changes. The bottom line? Plan for the future. The businesses that do will thrive. The ones that don’t will struggle to keep up.
