"Should you send a German CV or an English one when applying for jobs in Germany?" This is one of the most common questions I get—and the answer depends on the type of company and language of the job ad, also your language proficiency. Here’s a simple rule of thumb: Apply in the language of the job advertisement. If the ad is in German: send a German CV and cover letter. If the ad is in English: you can usually send an English CV, but still format it according to German standards (more on that below). But please be aware if you don't speak German at all then please don't prepare a German CV as it gives a false impression. Now let’s talk about company types: 1. Traditional German companies (Mittelstand, public sector, or conservative industries) They almost always expect a CV in German. Even if they mention “English is a plus,” they want to see that you’ve made the effort to adapt. 2. International companies or startups If the working language is English, an English CV is accepted. But don’t assume! Look at how the job ad is written, and check the company website to be sure. 3. Recruitment agencies in Germany Even if they communicate in English, they may still ask for a German CV later—because they’ll forward it to German-speaking clients. Quick tips for a Germany-style CV (Lebenslauf): No fancy design – keep it clean, clear, and professional Photo is required unless not specified Include date of birth and location (unless the job is very international) List your work experience in reverse-chronological order Don’t forget a short summary or profile at the top (in the right language!)
