
Every bride used to get a wardrobe with a mirror and a built-es four-poster bed and a sewing machine, the latter a gift from an Pelder sister. The bed had four thick, sturdy pawas, which were beautifully carved or crafted on a lathe. At the top of each leg was a built-in box in which the young lady could store buttons, bows, hair clips, medicines or scratch pads. All four pawas were connected by thick wooden supports, which were interwoven with a three- to four-inch-wide cotton navaar. This formed the base on which the bedding was laid. Every seven to eight days, the domestic workers would tighten the navaar while making the beds. The frame's supports were so thick and firm that they came to be known as peel pawa.
