- Karla Caves: A Journey into History The Karla Caves, located in the Sahyadri Hills of Maharashtra, are an amazing place to visit. These ancient rock-cut caves were built more than 2,000 years ago, around the 2nd century BCE. They are among the oldest Buddhist caves in India and were used as monasteries and prayer halls by Buddhist monks. A Look Back in Time The most famous part of the Karla Caves is the chaitya hall (prayer hall). It is a big hall carved out of solid rock with a stupa (a dome-shaped structure) in the center. The ceiling is made of wood and has survived for centuries, which is truly impressive. The pillars in the hall have beautiful carvings of elephants and other figures, showing the incredible skill of the artisans. The Travel Experience Visiting the Karla Caves is like stepping into the past. The inside of the caves feels peaceful, with soft light coming through the large arched window. The cool air and quiet surroundings make it a calming experience. From the entrance, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the green hills and valleys, especially during the monsoon season. Tips for Visitors Best Time to Visit: Monsoons (June to September) and winters (October to February). Getting There: The caves are close to Lonavala. You can take a train to Lonavala or drive from Mumbai or Pune. What to Bring: Comfortable shoes, a water bottle, and a camera. Entry Fee: There is a small fee to enter the caves. Nearby Places to Explore While you're here, you can also visit the Bhaja Caves, another ancient site nearby. Lonavala has many other attractions, like Lonavala Lake and Lion’s Point, which offer stunning views. The Karla Caves are not just a historical site; they are a place of peace and beauty.
