Growing up, I kept asking myself “Why am I not fair enough?” Fair enough to fit in. Fair enough to be seen. Fair enough…to be loved? I learned to hide my insecurities, to tuck them away like secrets, never daring to embrace them. And yet the world still told me, you’re too dark to be extraordinary. Too dark to be ordinary. Too dark for beauty. Too dark for anything? But then I started wondering, what does fair even mean? Is it about my skin, or is it about something deeper? Are we fair enough to accept who we are, fair enough to accept the person next to us? No. No, we are not. We are unfair. Unfair to dark skin, unfair to ourselves. Because somewhere, somehow, we got programmed to believe fair skin equals beauty. There is no pretty for, there is just pretty. There is just beauty, there is just us. Every skin tone deserves to be seen, celebrated, cherished. Because the fairest person in the room isn’t the one with the lightest skin. It’s the one who is fair to themselves, to others. To their truth. So maybe, just maybe, it’s time to stop letting others define us, stop restricting ourselves to their standards. Maybe it’s time we start being fair, truly fair to who we are. So now tell me, “Are we all fair enough?” . . . This is a silent film that questions what we were taught about skin, identity, and the quiet violence of beauty standards.
