Hyderabad commuters may soon get a big relief as the Telangana government is planning to introduce free travel in MMTS trains from June 2 (Telangana Formation Day). 🚆 The proposal has already received a green signal at the state level and is expected to be implemented as a 1-year pilot project. The main aim behind this move is to reduce traffic congestion and control rising pollution in the city, while encouraging more people to use public transport. As per reports, the scheme will be applicable to all passengers, both men and women, making daily travel more affordable for thousands of commuters. To support this, the state government will bear the annual ticket revenue that currently goes to the Railways. Along with free travel, the government is also planning major improvements in MMTS services, including: • Increasing train frequency during peak hours • Improving punctuality and services • Better station infrastructure • Introducing RTC shuttle buses for last-mile connectivity Currently, MMTS ridership has dropped significantly after COVID, from over 1 lakh daily passengers to around 40,000, mainly due to fewer services and connectivity issues. This initiative aims to bring back passengers and strengthen the city’s public transport system. However, the plan is still in the final approval stage, and requires coordination with South Central Railways and a formal agreement before implementation. #hyderabad #mmts #indianrailway #telanganagovernment #happeninghyderabad
