My never ending to-do list flashed in front of my eyes as I clenched my jaw and swerved to the right instead of my usual left. 10 minutes later, I found myself sitting in the soft sand, gazing at the vast blue glittery expanse that lay in front of me. The crashing of the waves against the shore punctured the pervading silence. Contrary to my surroundings, my mind was a whirlpool of thoughts and worries, each one demanding to be attended to. Yet the rhythmic ebb and flow of waves forced my thoughts to fade into the background. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath ,feeling more relaxed than I had in months. Why is it that we find solace by the sea, I wondered. Was it to gain perspective, to remember how utterly inconsequential all our worries seemed in the larger scheme of things? A surge of awe and fear washed over me as I was forced to confront the immensity of nature. It was a strange but sublime feeling, one that could not be expressed but only felt. Did the realisation of our insignificance terrify me? Yes. Yet it was also strangely comforting. It felt like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders.
