As a dermatologist, I always remind my patients that SPF is only part of the story — the ingredient list matters just as much. Not all sunscreens protect the skin the same way, and not every formula is suitable for every skin type. When choosing a sunscreen, I look beyond the SPF number and focus on how it protects, how stable it is, and how the skin tolerates it. Broad-spectrum protection is essential to shield against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. Equally important is the formulation — some ingredients may be irritating, pore-clogging, or unsuitable for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Sunscreen should protect your skin barrier, not compromise it. A good sunscreen works with your skin, layers well under other products, and encourages consistent daily use. If a product causes stinging, breakouts, or redness, it’s a sign to reassess — protection should never come at the cost of skin health. Remember: the best sunscreen is one that is well-formulated, appropriate for your skin type, and worn correctly and consistently. Flip the bottle, read the ingredients, and make informed choices — your future skin will thank you.
