Some places don’t just tell stories… they whisper history. This is Halebidu — a small town in Karnataka, once known as Dwarasamudra, the glorious capital of the Hoysala Empire. I visited this temple after almost a decade… and the feeling was just as magical as the first time. The Hoysaleswara Temple, built in the 12th century, is a masterpiece of Hoysala architecture. Every inch of this temple is carved from soft soapstone — telling tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and ancient Indian mythology. Look closely and you’ll see elephants, lions, dancers, flowers — all woven into stone like poetry frozen in time. Though the city was once destroyed in the 14th century, what remains today still stands as a symbol of art, devotion, and resilience. In 2023, Halebidu became a part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, alongside Belur and Somanathapura — celebrated as The Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas. If you ever travel towards Chikmagalur, make sure you stop here for a while.
