WhatsApp just dropped one of its biggest updates in years, and India hit the brakes almost instantly. Here’s the deal. Soon you’ll be able to set a username, so people can message you with just a handle instead of your phone number. Sounds great, right? No more handing your personal number to every new contact, every group, every stranger who asks. But there’s a catch. The same feature makes life easier for scammers too. If someone can reach you without ever showing a number, impersonating a bank, an official, or a brand gets a whole lot simpler. That’s exactly why India’s IT ministry has told WhatsApp to pause the rollout here and explain itself first. So for now, it isn’t live in India.
