⚠️ A Cautionary Tale from Hanoi: Watch Your Bills! Just a heads-up for anyone heading to Vietnam! I had an incredible trip overall, but I wanted to share a “scam alert” from our night out on Hanoi’s clubbing street. After a few drinks, my friends and I decided to hop into one of the taxis lined up outside the club instead of waiting for a Grab. Big mistake #1. Not only did the driver take an “unusually long” route, but then came the “switcheroo” scam. The fare was 340,000 VND. I was trying to clear out my smaller bills, but the driver kept insisting on a 500k bill (500,000 VND). Here is how they get you: 1. I handed him a 500k note. He quickly swapped it for a 50k note (they look very similar in low light!) and told me I made a mistake. 2. Being a bit tipsy, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and handed him another 500k note. 3. He tried the same trick again! Luckily, my friend turned on a flashlight and we saw my original 500k note sitting right by his feet. We grabbed our money back and got out. It was a sour note on a great trip, but a lesson learned: Always use Grab for a fixed price, and never let a driver “help” you with your wallet.
