A horrifying incident unfolded at a wedding in Mallah Tola, Chausa, Buxar district, Bihar, on the night of 24 February 2026. Eighteen-year-old Aarti Kumari was shot point-blank by a masked man during the jaimala ceremony, right on stage in front of family and guests. The accused, identified as neighbour Deenbandhu Choudhary, allegedly harboured a one-sided obsession with the bride for nearly two years. Despite repeated harassment, Aarti went ahead with her arranged marriage to a groom from Ballia, Uttar Pradesh — a decision that reportedly enraged him. The gunshot was masked by loud wedding music. Aarti collapsed bleeding on stage before being rushed to Sadar Hospital, Buxar, and later referred to a Trauma Centre in Varanasi, where she remains on ventilator support in critical condition. Before being shifted, she reportedly named her attacker — Deenbandhu Choudhary — who remains absconding. Police have detained his father, Ramashankar Chaudhary, for questioning and are conducting raids. An FIR has been registered under attempt to murder. This deeply disturbing incident has once again raised serious questions around women's safety, stalking, and crime in Bihar.
