Here’s a list of 40 things you can gently teach your baby before they turn 1 — focusing on sensory, motor, emotional, and communication skills. These are not “milestones” they must achieve, but fun, bonding, and developmental activities to encourage learning: Sensory & Exploration 1. Touching and feeling different textures 2. Exploring colors through toys and books 3. Listening to household sounds (bells, spoons, paper) 4. Safe food tasting (sweet, sour, mild flavors) 5. Smelling gentle scents (fruits, flowers, spices from distance) 6. Water play and splashing safely 7. Playing on natural surfaces (grass, sand, carpet) 8. Looking in the mirror for self-recognition ⸻ Motor Skills (Gross & Fine) 9. Tummy time for neck strength 10. Rolling over both sides 11. Sitting with and without support 12. Crawling, scooting, or shuffling 13. Pulling up to stand with support 14. Cruising along furniture 15. Reaching and grasping toys 16. Transferring objects between hands 17. Banging objects together 18. Stacking 2–3 blocks or cups ⸻ Communication & Language 19. Responding to their name 20. Babbling (ma-ma, da-da, ba-ba) 21. Waving hello and goodbye 22. Pointing to show interest 23. Trying simple baby signs (milk, more, all done) 24. Recognizing familiar words (mama, papa, no, bye) 25. Listening to songs, rhymes, and claps 26. Turn-taking in baby talk ⸻ Social & Emotional 27. Smiling back when smiled at 28. Copying facial expressions 29. Hugging and cuddling for comfort 30. Playing peek-a-boo for object permanence 31. Sharing toys in a “give and take” game 32. Recognizing familiar people 33. Showing preference for favorite toys or people 34. Understanding gentle “no” ⸻ Daily Life & Fun Skills 35. Holding a spoon or cup with help 36. Drinking from a sippy/straw cup 37. Trying self-feeding with finger foods 38. Helping in dressing (lifting arms, pushing feet) 39. Turning pages of board books 40. Putting toys in a basket (clean-up play) ✨ These are not rigid lessons but gentle opportunities for babies to explore and grow. Every baby develops differently, so the goal is exposure, bonding, and joy in learning.
