The Federal Reserve doesn’t “print” money in the traditional sense. Most new money is created digitally. When the Fed wants to inject liquidity, it buys government securities (like Treasury bonds) from banks—paying with digital reserves credited to bank accounts at the Fed. This expands the money supply without printing cash. Physical currency—printed by the U.S. Treasury—is only a small part of the total money supply (about $2.3T in circulation vs. over $21T M2 money supply as of 2024).
