📍Pushkarni Kola, Hampi Karnataka The stepwells in Hampi, Karnataka are called Pushkarinis. The Pushkarinis are ancient water tanks and ceremonial stepwells that are a popular tourist attraction in Hampi. They are known for their pyramid-shaped stairways and are considered to be some of the most beautiful stepwells in India. The Pushkarinis were used for many purposes, including: Religious and ceremonial: The Pushkarinis were used for ritual bathing and cleansing before prayers, as well as for festivals. Annual boat festival: During the reign of the Vijaynagara Empire, the Pushkarinis were used to host the annual boat festival. Storing sacred water: The Pushkarinis were built to store sacred water from the Thungabadra River. The Pushkarinis are designed symmetrically as rectangles or squares, and have several large tiers with multiple steps leading down to the next level. Many of the Pushkarinis were surrounded by pillars. Hampi is located in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka, India. The nearest railway station is Hosapete (Hospete), from which you can take a taxi or public bus to Hampi.
