Manikaran located in the Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh, near Kasol. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati once spent a long time meditating in this valley. Goddess Parvati lost her earring-Mani in the river Parvati. Lord Shiva ordered Sheshnag-the serpent king-to retrieve it. In anger, Sheshnag refuse to bring back Mani & released intense heat from the earth, causing hot water springs to burst out. These springs brought back the jewel, and the place came to be known as Manikaran(Mani = jewel, Karan = ear). The hot sulphur springs found here even today are believed to be sacred and healing, capable of curing skin and joint ailments. Manikaran holds great importance in Sikh history due to the visit of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, in the early 16th century. Guru Nanak visited Manikaran with his disciple Bhai Mardana. When food was needed for langar, Guru Nanak asked his followers to lift stones. Miraculously, hot water springs emerged, allowing food to be cooked. Even today, food (rice and lentils) is cooked in the hot springs at Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara, a practice that continues as a symbol of divine blessing.
