Shri Chennakeshava swamy temple located about 220 km from Bangalore Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu Built by the Hoysala dynasty. Construction Started: 1117 CE by King Vishnuvardhana, after his victory over the Cholas at Talakad. Took over 100 years to complete the construction of temple. History & Significance ✨The temple was commissioned to mark the victory of Hoysalas over the Cholas. ✨It reflects the transition from Chalukyan to Hoysala architecture, becoming one of the finest examples of Hoysala art and sculpture. ✨The temple was plundered multiple times by Delhi Sultanate and later invaders but restored by the Hoysalas and Wodeyars of Mysore. ✨It is one of the earliest and grandest Hoysala temples and, along with Halebidu’s Hoysaleswara Temple, is being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status. ☘️Architecture Highlights ✨Built on a star-shaped platform (jagati) – typical Hoysala style. ✨Exquisite soapstone carvings depicting: Episodes from Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana. ✨Dancing figures (Madanikas/Shilabalikas) – elegant, detailed sculptures. ✨Main Sanctum (Garbhagriha): Houses the idol of Lord Chennakeshava, a 6.5 ft tall image of Vishnu in standing posture. ✨Pillars: The Narasimha pillar (once could rotate on its base) and intricately carved lathe-turned pillars. ✨Gopuram (Rajagopura): Added later by the Vijayanagara kings in the 14th century. ✨Numerous sub-shrines dedicated to Saiva, Vaishnava, and Shakti deities. 📍Shri Chennakeshava Swamy temple, Belur, Karnataka #chennakeshavatemple #belur #karnataka #mysore #coorg #explurger #explore #trendingreels #travelgram #exploremore #explorepage #bengaluru #bengaluru_diaries #bengalurufc #maharashtra #mumbai #punecity #exploremore
