Thang, the last village of India. At -11°C, we sat inside the home of an 87-year-old man overlooking the India–Pakistan border, warming our hands around cups of kahwa while he spoke about a life split quietly by war. Some had gone across for weddings and never made it back. Some lost parents, siblings, partners. Some spent only a fraction of their lives together and carried each other in memory for the next sixty years. What stayed with me wasn’t just the military posts or the surreal beauty of the mountains. It was how gently they spoke about longing. As if grief had frozen into the landscape itself. From his veranda, was the border. Just mountains, silence, and distance. Divisions in the map have never felt the same to me since.
