We recently visited the science gallery in Bangalore. An exhibition on the India - MIT connection was on at the center, which was the result of alumni association who had painstakingly found old archives and letters to put a beautiful an enriching story together. I found this gem in that exhibition, which showcased Lokmanya Tilak's reference about MIT in 1884!! He extolled Indians to pursue technical education and hailed MIT as a model school for technical education. Using his newspaper as the medium he encouraged young Indians to enrol in MIT and come back with their technical knowledge to empower India and free her from colonial rule! Today on the death anniversary of this visionary leader, I can only imagine the power of his love for the country, that made him search far and wide for opportunities Indians under colonial rule. Remember it was a time way before Google. India was under colonial rule so free information exchange was a myth. His articles were always seen as a threat to the colonial rule and the circulation was never easy, let he managed to encourage a bunch of people to travel to MIT and pursue a technical education. @indians_in_mit @mit
