TW: conversations of self harm as part of a training session for prevention counselors. We lost someone to this same way, and they lived amidst those streets that the film begins with. Khotachi wadi. Charni road. A family member we were very close to. So the camera moving through those streets is very personal. Specially moving in that way, almost floating through. Having lived in Mumbai, I’ve always felt that there is no sanctity of space and sound for anything. From love making to a deep conversation to work. The sounds and stress of the city seep in. No matter what you’re trying to do. And so we wanted this to be true for the training session for the counselor as well. They don’t even have funds to really run the center. So how will we get them funds to find a space to train? So we had them do it in the corridor of an apartment building. And a child is literally riding his cycle in the background while this is going on. Inspired by the films of Scorsese where he shows New York in a similar stifling manner. The back and forth between the two sets up her real nature. Her absolute lack on entitlement as a person. And deep need to impress a sort of parent figure. Someone she looks up to. It will set her up for this film. Also how this type of counseling works. There are levels. And you have to learn certain things. Level 1-4. Her first night, going ahead in the film, we’re going to see her deal with a level 4 caller. The most scary kind as their threat of self danger is the highest. That last line, ‘Mamta Ma’am. I won’t let you down’ says everything about Aaliah. Who she is at the very core. Someone who places people she loves and looks up to, above herself. But also the kind that someone can come towards and love enough to place her above themselves. Because she deserves that. And at the heart of this attempt, one can succeed much more, if you can love someone more than yourself. Scene 2 follows in next reel. Full film available on YouTube on the adityakripalani channel.
