The 7 Layers of a Food Forest 🌳🌱🍓 you don’t need to use all of these layers and can create a mini food forest in any size space! 1. Canopy Layer (Tall Trees) 🌳 The tallest trees provide shade, wind protection, and habitat for birds and beneficial insects. These trees are often large fruit or nut trees. 2. Low Tree Layer (Small Trees) 🍋 Smaller fruit trees that thrive in the partial shade of the canopy. Can be nitrogen-fixing species to improve soil health. 3. Shrub Layer (Berry Bushes & Perennials) 🍇 Bushy, fruit-producing plants and nitrogen-fixing shrubs. Provides food while adding biodiversity. 4. Herbaceous Layer (Herbs & Pollinator Plants) 🌿 Culinary and medicinal herbs, pollinator-attracting flowers, and plants that repel pests. These can also include dynamic accumulators (deep-rooted plants that bring nutrients up to the surface). 5. Ground Cover Layer (Creeping Plants) 🍓 Low-growing plants that suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, and prevent erosion. Often edible or nitrogen-fixing. 6. Climbing/Vine Layer (Vertical Crops) 🍇 Climbing plants use the tall trees, shrubs, or trellises for support, maximising vertical space. Can provide food, shade, and nitrogen fixation. 7.
