Never Loose Hope... Never Give Up.... In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Downey struggled with serious drug addiction (including heroin, cocaine, etc.). Between 1996 and 2001, he was arrested multiple times on drug-related charges, violated probation, spent time in jail, and entered rehab several times. His addiction issues significantly damaged his career and reputation in Hollywood. Because of his troubled past, many studios were initially reluctant or refused to hire him. At one point, producers said they “would not cast him at any price” due to his history. When Marvel was casting Iron Man (released in 2008), director Jon Favreau strongly pushed for Downey even though some executives and insurance companies were hesitant because of his past and his “insurable risk.” Former Marvel executives admitted they thought casting an “addict” was risky — but Favreau and others believed Downey was perfect for the role In 2005, Marvel took a bold step by financing movies itself through a major loan (≈$525 million) using character rights as collateral — a risky move that aimed to establish Marvel Studios.
