What happens if BOTH engines fail? 😱 The biggest fear most people have when flying is a total engine failure. Will the plane fall out of the sky like a rock? 🪨❌ The answer is absolutely NOT. Modern commercial jets are actually massive, highly efficient gliders. Thanks to aerodynamic physics and something called the Glide Ratio (roughly 1:17 for modern jets), a plane doesn’t just plunge. For every foot it descends, it glides 17 feet forward! If engines fail at cruising altitude (35,000\text{ ft}), pilots have a range of 90 to 100 miles to guide the aircraft safely to a runway.
