I finally tried Turkish coffee made in hot sand ☕️🇹🇷 Not the regular one — the real old-school version. Few things most people don’t know about it: • This method dates back to the Ottoman Empire (16th century). Coffee wasn’t brewed on fire — it was slowly cooked in hot river sand so the heat spreads evenly from all sides. • The sand isn’t for flavor. It’s for temperature control — the coffee rises gently, forming thick foam (called köpük), which is considered a sign of good luck and skill. • The coffee is never filtered. You drink it with the grounds settling at the bottom — which is why you should never finish the last sip. • Traditionally, after drinking, people read fortunes from the leftover coffee grounds — a ritual still taken seriously in many Turkish homes. • Fun fact: In old Turkish culture, a bride’s coffee skills were once considered a marriage quality 👀 • Turkish coffee is so culturally important that it’s listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. 📍 Where to experience it best in Turkey: You’ll find it across Turkey, but for the most authentic sand-brewed experience: • Balat (Istanbul) – where I tried it, old cafés still keep the tradition alive • Grand Bazaar area • Sultanahmet & Eminönü (look for “Kumda Türk Kahvesi” boards) ✈️ Tips for travelers planning to try it: • Don’t stir it after it’s served • Drink it slowly — it’s strong • Eat the Turkish delight or chocolate before sipping • Avoid ordering if you’re sensitive to bitterness or acidity • One cup is more than enough — it’s intense My honest opinion: It’s very bitter, thick, and strong. Personally? I didn’t love the taste 😅 But as an experience — watching it rise from the sand, knowing the history, feeling the tradition — it’s absolutely worth trying at least once.
